Mindfulness Meditation and Yoga for Depression

Depression is a clinical state that may have the following symptoms; hopelessness, lethargy, poor concentration, decreased motivation, insomnia and anxiety / stress. Research has demonstrated that meditation and yoga can help to heal depression and other chronic illnesses. Two commonly used treatment protocols are Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) was developed at the University of Toronto.

There are health professionals within Toronto that lead Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT ) and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) courses. OHIP may cover the cost of  a Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy / Stress Reduction program within Toronto if a qualified medical physician is leading the course and your family physician refers you. Any yoga or meditation class will have a significant benefit to emotional and physical wellness, and you don’t have to take a Mindfulness Based Cogntive Therapy / Stress Reduction program to discover the benefits of yoga and meditation. There are many introductory yoga and meditation courses within the Toronto region. If your finances are limited google `` karma yoga toronto `` or ``free yoga toronto`` to find studios that are offering free meditation / yoga classes within Toronto. Ideally, your teacher would be sensitive to, or have some experience with using yoga or meditation for depression or anxiety, but this too is not a necessity.  There is little to lose by trying. If you are new to yoga or meditation then seek out a beginners class.

I will be adding a list of resources that might be helpful for those wishing to try yoga or meditation but who do not have access to a yoga or meditation teachers in their area.

Within the next year, I will be offering  yoga and mindfulness mediation based courses within the Toronto region. If  you are interested please revisit the site or sign up for my newsletter.
